Community use of cloth masks to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2: CDC Scientific Brief

The CDC has published a scientific brief that summarizes research proving cloth face masks are effective as a source control to prevent community spread of COVID-19. The research also supports the suggestion that cloth masks provide some protection to the person wearing the mask.

The article does not claim a cloth mask can be used in place of proper personal protective equipment, like a properly fitted N95 respirator. However cloth masks do provide some protection for the wearer.

I see this as good news that supports the ongoing message of the importance of wearing a mask to reduce community spread, protecting others and yourself.

Respirator Fit Testing

Respirators are critical pieces of personal protective equipent for protecting worker from uncontrolled airborne hazards.  A respirator user must be trained, medically approved, and fit tested before wearing a respirator.

Fit Testing is the process of evaluating how well the respirator seals to the users face to provide proper protection.

Quantitative fit testing for any type of respirator is performed using the TSI PortaCount™ Respirator Fit Tester following the OSHA Ambient Aerosol Fit Testing Protocol.

Qualiative fit testing using sacharrine or bitrix ® solution can also be performed for half and full face air purifying respirators.
